The Asian American Federation of New York Announces
Commissioned by the Federation, directed and produced by Renata Huang, and narrated by David Henry Hwang, "Tribute and Remembrance" is a 69- minute documentary that examines the multitude of ways the September 11th tragedy impacted the Asian American community. Broken down into five major parts, the first segment focuses on the economic devastation of New York City's Chinatown; the second segment follows a South Asian taxi cab driver who has watched his weekly earnings fall by 75%; part three touches upon the selective detention of Islamic and South Asian immigrants through the story of the break-up of a Pakistani-American family, after the main breadwinner is detained by the INS; the much stigmatized subject of mental health is examined in the fourth segment; and in the fifth segment, 3 families share the memories of their loved ones lost in the tragedy. The documentary does end on an upbeat note, however, by highlighting the many philanthropic efforts of everyday Asian Americans, in the midst of their hardships. Comments Cao K. O, Executive Director of the Asian American Federation of New York, "We wanted to produce "Tribute and Remembrance: Asian Americans After 9/11" to tell the stories that are seldom told or understood. Some of the stories may be painful for some to hear again or even for the first time, but the acknowledgement of the different experiences that people faced throughout the crisis is vital to our healing process and to the rebuilding of American unity." A Q&A; session will follow the screening. The event is free and open to the public. The screening is made possible through the co-sponsorship of the Smithsonian Institution Asian Pacific American Programs and the support of the numerous organizations based in the Washington, DC metropolitan area, including, the Conference on Asian Pacific American Leadership, the Greater Washington DC Chapter of the Organization of Chinese Americans, the Northern Virginia Chapter of the Organization of Chinese American and the Sikh Mediwatch and Resource Task Force. The Asian American Federation of New York is a not-for-profit organization that provides public policy and community service leadership to identify and meet the critical needs of Asian Americans in the New York metropolitan area. The New York City-based Federation serves the Asian American community by analyzing issues, voicing common concerns, advocating for responsive policies, offering financial and management assistance, coordinating service delivery, and creating unified, community-wide initiatives. The Federation, which began operations in 1990, has a membership of 35 community agencies that provide health and human services to diverse populations. -###-
